With a large group of health-conscious employees who ride their bikes to work, SMUD is an enthusiastic partner in the Sacramento region's "May is Bike Month."
Businesses are gearing up for the fourth annual celebration of bicycling and the collective challenge of riding 1 million miles during the month of May.
In 2007, SMUD employees logged 16,732 miles during Bike to Work Month. SMUD provides about 125 free bicycle lockers and showers for employees who ride their bicycles to work. SMUD also has about 20 employees - mainly meter readers - who use bicycles during their workdays.

During Bike Commute Month 2007, 4,133 cyclists in the Sacramento region participated in the annual Million Mile May campaign to encourage bicycling. The number of cyclists participating has increased each year of the campaign, from 2,114 in 2005 to 4,133 in 2007.
Research shows that regular cycling can cut the chances of heart disease in half. It often faster to bicycle to work than to drive if the commute follows streets clogged with traffic congestion.
Also, it's usually easier to park a bike than it is a car, and it's certainly less expensive. Speaking of expenses, bicycling to work reduces the wear on the commuter's automobile.
Employers recognize the benefits of encouraging their employees to be healthy, and bicycling is part of a healthy lifestyle.
People who cycle to work regularly are more productive and less likely to take time off for sickness. With fewer employees driving cars to work, less parking space is required. And organizations such as SMUD that encourage cycling are perceived by the public as environmentally aware employers.
Census data show that 1.8 percent of commute trips in the four-county Sacramento area are made by bicycles. This is the highest in the nation (followed by the Phoenix area at 1.4 percent).
