Voluntary Emergency Curtailment Program (VECP)

Sign up for VECP and help reduce the demand for energy

When you join VECP, your business can help reduce the demand for power when supplies grow tight.

While many areas of the country have a surplus of electricity, California does not. That means electricity supplies can grow tight on the hottest summer days. Should an electrical emergency arise, SMUD calls on VECP customers to reduce their electrical use by a pre-determined amount. Sign up now.

Often times, this can be non-essential uses that allow your business to continue to operate with reduced lighting, air conditioning, or other uses of electricity. This is a voluntary program, there is no obligation and no penalty if your business is unable to respond to SMUD's request to reduce your usage.

More than 100 commercial, industrial, and institutional customers sign up each year to help ease a potential energy crunch by participating in VECP. The 2008 plan allows all customers to participate regardless of how much electricity they use. See the list of 2008 participating volunteers.

As a way of saying thank you to customers who volunteer for VECP, SMUD offers the following recognition:

  • Your company name listed in SMUD VECP print ads in both the Sacramento Bee and Sacramento Business Journal in May and October.

  • Your company name listed on SMUD's VECP Web page. See 2008 list of volunteers.
  • The list must be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded free from the Adobe Web site.

To volunteer as a VECP customer, email SMUD at commercial@smud.org or call SMUD at 1-877-622-SMUD (7683).
